Description Kerchief of red and white cotton with unhemmed edges. Black printed bust portraits of two men in oval surrounds, with eagles and shields above and below. Square border with geometric and scroll design, surrounded by an outer border of 6-point stars. Two eagles hold banners with printed inscription: "THE UNION AND THE CONSTITUTION FOREVER." Printed inscriptions beneath the portraits: "GEN. JAMES A. GARFIELD / REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT / 1880" and "GEN. CHESTER A. ARTHUR / REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FOR VICE PRESIDENT / 1880." Inscription with printer's name in upper left corner: "WASHINGTON S.H. GREENE & SONS."

James Garfield was elected President of the United States in 1880, with Chester A. Arthur as vice president. Garfield was assassinated in 1881, after only 6 months in office. The handkerchief was produced by S.H. Greene & Sons of Warwick, Rhode Island; their "Washington" line of prints was nationally known.
