Title | [Arietta Street] |
Description |
Oil painting on canvas, framed. View of Arietta Street, Tompkinsville, Staten Island. Scene shows the village center of Tompkinsville, looking west on Arietta Street from the ferry landing (up what is now Victory Boulevard from the shore below Bay Street). Among the buildings included: Wiener's Saloon (foreground right); the Nautilus Hotel (left middle distance); the steeple of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church (center distance); and the cupola of the Pavilion Hotel (on the hilltop). The figures in the foreground are said to be portraits of well-known Staten Islanders of the 1860s. The couple on horseback in the right foreground are said to be Mr. and Mrs. Tompkins Westervelt, and the man standing at far left is "Fatty" De Nyse, a local saloon keeper. The painting is signed by the artist in black paint along the left edge, near the figure of De Nyse: "C Roch 1863". (Keywords: New York) |
Acquisition | Gift of Mrs. Harry Meyer |
Ownership and History |
Nothing is known about C. Roch, an itinerant artist. Mrs. Harry Meyer, who donated this painting to the Staten Island Historical Society in 1965, declared that "Arietta Street" was painted in lieu of payment for board and lodging while the artist was staying nearby at the home of a member of the Meyer family. See the book "Staten Island Scenery: Paintings, Prints, Drawings and Photographs, 1679-1900" by Barnett Shepherd for more information. |
