| Description |
Woman's coat of cream wool fabric, lined with brown plain weave cotton and faced with pale gold silk; all edges are bound with narrow gold silk ribbon. The coat has a very high waist, smooth in front with a single hook closure and pleated in back. It has a round neckline with a standing collar and a separate double cape collar with an unattached self-fabric tie to hold it in place at the neck. The sleeves are gathered at back of shoulder and narrow toward the cuffs. It is considered a very rare and nice example of an early coat. | Ownership and History |
This coat was donated to the Historical Society in 1942 by a descendent of the Latourette family, which first settled on Staten Island in the early 1700s. The donor's great-grandfather, David Latourette (1786-1864), owned a farm in Richmond (Richmondtown), Staten Island, and sent his produce to market in Manhattan. He and his wife, Ann Crocheron, had six sons and four daughters. The coat is made from a woolen twill fabric. Similar types of material were known during the period as "cassimere" and "pelisse cloth." |
