Ownership and History This coat was donated to the Historical Society in 1942 by a descendent of the Latourette family, which first settled on Staten Island in the early 1700s. The donor's great-grandfather, David Latourette (1786-1864), owned a farm in Richmond (Richmondtown), Staten Island, and sent his produce to market in Manhattan. He and his wife, Ann Crocheron, had six sons and four daughters.

The coat is made from a woolen twill fabric. Similar types of material were known during the period as "cassimere" and "pelisse cloth."
