Ownership and History The "third race" in the photographer's title for this photo is the 1893 America's Cup race between the American yacht Vigilant and the British challenger Valkyrie. The Vigilant won the race, and days later went on to win the America's Cup.

Among the ephemera items donated to the Historical Society by Alice Austen in 1945 is a handbill advertising daily trips on the steamboat Columbia to watch the "Great International Yacht Race," following the yachts Vigilant and Valkyrie over the course sailed. The handbill has Alice Austen's handwritten inscription "Monday October 9th 1893," which suggests that this photo was taken from the deck of the steamboat Columbia.
