Woman's 1-piece wedding gown. Ivory satin full-length dress with attached three-quarter-length net overlay that has applied beads in floral, leaf, and line designs. Round neckline is edged with rhinestones. Bodice has stays and is slightly puffed in front. Short sleeves are edged with beaded fringe. Full-length skirt is slightly gathered at waist with extra fullness in back. Skirt has off-center front slit trimmed with decorative bows and rhinestones. Overlay has shaped hem edged with beaded fringe. Dress has linen lining, back opening with drawstring tie at back of neck, hook and eye closures, and snaps. | Ownership and History | Marie Isaacs (ca. 1881-1945) lived on Staten Island. Her father, Askel Isaacs, was one of the founders of Congregation B'nai Jeshurun, Staten Island's first synagogue. Marie Isaacs wore this dress at her wedding to Reuben Mord, a store owner, in 1900. They had one child, Rosalie Mord Litinsky. Mrs. Mord was an amateur artist, and some of her paintings are still owned by her descendents. |
