Description Portrait of Michael J. Halloran in firefighting uniform. Bust portrait drawn in pastel on paper, possibly over a photograph. Front view of subject wearing a red double-breasted shirt with a black necktie and a white helmet with frontpiece marked: "[PRE]SIDEN[T] / E. F. D. / M. J. H." Portrait is in a rectangular wood frame with an applied metal label at bottom inscribed: "MICHAEL J. HALLORAN / President 1912-1915."

Ownership and History Michael J. Halloran was Chief of the Edgewater Fire Department and President of the Veteran Fireman's Association. He was also a charter member of the Staten Island Lodge of Elks and served briefly as postmaster of Stapleton, Staten Island before his death on December 5, 1915 at age 49.

The Edgewater Fire Department was formed in the 1870s. The volunteer firefighters of its various companies protected communities near the east shore of Staten Island.
