Metal fireman's badge from Alert Hose Company No. 1, worn by John Herbert Wilkinson (1863-1941). Silver-colored metal badge in Maltese cross shape. Circular central medallion has a raised illustration of a firefighting apparatus with the letters "N. S. / F. D." above and below; upper and lower portions of the cross are inscribed "ALERT / 1"; left and right portions of the cross have a raised image of a hydrant and a crossed hook and ladder. Reverse has a threaded screw-type fastener with maker's mark: "C.G. BRAXMAR / 10 MAIDEN NEW YORK." The C. G. Braxmar Company was founded in 1879 by Charles Braxmar. The firm produced many badges for fire departments and other agencies. Badge measures 2.125 inches high x 2.125 inches wide. (Keywords: Firefighter, NSFD) |

Ownership and History | John Herbert Wilkinson (1863-1941) was one of the organizers of Alert Hose Company No. 1 of New Brighton. The company was formed April 14, 1884, and disbanded October 1, 1905. A painting, also in the Staten Island Historical Society's collection (catalog number P01.0145), portrays Wilkinson rescuing a child from a burning building. |
