Woman's uniform, American Red Cross, World War II. Gray wool skirt and jacket. Jacket has collar with notched lapels; long sleeves; front closure with buttons marked "AMERICAN / RED CROSS"; 2 flap pockets; pin on right lapel: "A.R.C."; red, green and white round fabric patch on wearer's left sleeve: "AMERICAN RED CROSS / MOTOR SERVICE"; single red chevron on wearer's left sleeve near cuff; fabric label inside jacket: "Sacony / Palm Beach / GOODALL - SANFORD, INC. Ownership and History | Worn by M. Adelaide Irving (1884-1969) during World War II. Miss Irving, the daughter of Maria Adelaide Henderson and Gugy Aemilius Irving, lived at 102 Henderson Avenue in New Brighton, Staten Island. She served with the American Red Cross during both World Wars, working as an ambulance driver. She also served as treasurer for the Society for Seamen's Children and was a member of the Staten Island Real Estate Board. Miss Irving was honored as a Staten Island Advance Woman of Achievement in 1965. |
